Help me with one thing…

Can you check Alexander Graham Bell Association’s website : www.agbell.org and please tell me if they ever published a press release acknowledging about the “Through Deaf Eyes” documentary.

Kudos to Grant Laird, Jr. for finding AG Bell’s press release on their website. Read below:

“Through Deaf Eyes” Addresses Perspectives on Deafness
Several AG Bell Members Featured in Film

“Through Deaf Eyes,” a two-hour PBS documentary exploring deafness in America over the last 200 years, will air on PBS stations nationwide on Wednesday, March 21, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. Narrated by Stockard Channing, the film includes interviews with former AG Bell Executive Director & CEO, K. Todd Houston, Ph.D.; board member Irene Leigh, Ph.D.; Alan Marvelli, Ph.D.; filmmakers Kimby Caplan and Adrean Mangiardi; and members David James and Sally Taylor, among others.

The film presents experiences of American history – family life, education, work and community connections – from the perspective of people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Several segments of the film explore the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and the work of Alexander Graham Bell to help people understand that children with hearing loss could learn spoken language and participate in mainstream society. The film also explores the controversies around hearing technologies such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, and underscores the importance of providing parents whose children are diagnosed with hearing loss comprehensive information about hearing loss and the full range of communication options available to them.

(Amy Cohen Efron here, see the politically correct language written by AG Bell Association vaguely emphasizes that “the full range of communication options available to them” – then why AG Bell strongly advocates Auditory Verbal Therapy programs as indicated on their website?)

NAD Looks at the Past and Envisions the Future “ Through Deaf Eyes”

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to be an outreach partner for Through Deaf Eyes, the first comprehensive film about deaf history that will be broadcast nationally on March 21, 2007, at 9 p.m. (EST), on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). Check local listings for your area.

Through Deaf Eyes is a two-hour documentary exploring nearly 200 years of deaf life in America. The film presents the shared experiences of American history “ family life, education, work, and community connections“ from the perspective of deaf citizens. Interviews include community leaders, historians, and deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology and identity. Bringing a deaf cinematic lens to the film are six artistic works by deaf media artists and filmmakers.

This groundbreaking documentary encourages respect and understanding of the rich history, culture, and contributions of the deaf community, said Bobbie Beth Scoggins, president of the National Association of the Deaf. Through Deaf Eyes also highlights the work of the NAD since 1880, and our focus on issues such as American Sign Language in educational settings, employment opportunities, and telecommunications access.

Scoggins also said that the documentary does not hold back any punches; it is powerful in all of its messages. Perhaps the strongest message is that American Sign Language continues to be the thread that runs through deaf history and how its presence or absence has impacted and continues to impact lives.

Looking back into our history, American history, deaf history, and NAD history, there are parts that are painful. We make no excuses, only apologies and commitment to change, for things that cannot be justified, even when they happened decades ago.  This reference by Scoggins is to the first half of the 20th century, during which time the NAD did not accept people of color as members. Scoggins continued, The NAD is open and inclusive in its membership, Board of Directors, staff, programs and overall efforts to promote, protect, and preserve the rights and quality of life of all deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States. We continue to strive to improve all that we do.

(Amy Cohen Efron here, NAD consciously acknowledged that they did not accept people of color at the first half of the 20th century, and NAD PUBLICLY announced that they are open and inclusive! – that’s big of NAD to say this!)

Through Deaf Eyes is powerful in its message that the work of the NAD must continue to ensure the brightest future possible for current and future generations of deaf Americans.

Hello??? AG Bell Association?
Why you are not supporting this? Did you know that this documentary will tell a story about your ‘founder’ and his so-called contributions to the Deaf History?

Why you didn’t acknowledge this? Why you didn’t help with funding this show?

Are you consciously denying this?

Mmmm… (please forgive this quality of the video – I hadda to make it in a haste…. focus the message please!)

I checked the http://www.agbell.org and clicked the “about AGB” and then clicked “Press Release: News Release”. You’re right.. it does not say ONE word about the PBS on Deaf Eyes. I also checked the news release about their funding to 287 children to recieve the AVT therapy. I find it very interesting. Thanks for checking this out. It makes me feel like we’re dumbfound. We need to be aware of what is around us. AGB is fifthy rich!

Thank you Grant for searching the press release from AG Bell Association about the documentary.

You are the gem, Grant!

Now, why didn’t AG Bell help with funding? Or being a part of the Outreach partners along with NAD and three other premier universities?

Just wondering…

Amy Cohen Efron

Don’t let AGBell control us.

Let’s find out tomorrow. We’ll see.

I wonder one of 7 board members who is the AGBell employee resigned from BOT Gallaudet?

😉 White Ghost

I am Deaf history bluff guy,

Recently you have created ‘The Great Ironic story” that helps me to understand clearly what the purpose of the AVT therapy is.

I began to realize that the eupheism of AVT therapy is simply Pure Oralism, I strongly believe that the Deaf history repeats itself.

Seriously, the AVT therapy may be growing bigger and bigger that threatens to the BiBi Approach.

Please keep to remember that the Pure Oralism movement took about 60 years to defeat the politics of the manual or combined system supporters by controlling about 80 percent of the Deaf schools.

I am thinking about creating my Deaf History/Politics-oriented Vlog.

My pleasure 🙂

Let’s wait till we all watch this show then we will have interesting and healthily discussion.

Looking forward to it.

Most important of all, tape the show!!

gwlj

I am glad that AGBell had that on their website about this PBS documentary and say their comments, this will show their bias after people watch the documentary.

AGBell is our biggest hegemony group which is the reason we deaf community are still in the dark.

I hope that after everyone sees the documentary, the Deafhood will grow bigger and bigger!

John F. Egbert

Amy,

Kudos for your best effort to reveal how AGB organization’s denial and reject of distributing to their own members. I can understand why they refused to see our truth in our genuine history of deaf lives, language, and culture. God gave us beautiful gift with our elegant and eloquent affection and happiness.

Absolutely, I support the statement from John Egbert’s perspective also Grant Laird, too!

Thank you all for wonderful sharing with us.

Nick

Thanks for the heads up…I’m going to ask my hearing friends and family to watch this show and to give me their inputs.

I am also curious from the general hearing people’s point of views, as well as deaf people’s.

This will be a very discussion after we all watch that show!

*very interesting discussion

That’s what I meant to say! Darn for no edit button! 😉

Go to “http://www.agbell.org”, then click “Upcoming Events”, you will see the calendar, click the 21st from calendar, you will see ” Through Deaf Eyes on PBS TV”

Hope the tv show will tell good stories abt DEAF!

Looking forward to watch the show! Wondering… will it going to be hot topic?? Just curious.

Amy,

I agree that, as in the usualness, the AGBAD is in a state of denial. I am curious to know what BoT member Ken Levinson would comment since he himself is a former president of ABGAD.

Hey, folks, don’t complain that AGBell didn’t help sponsor this documentary. As one poster said–this film doesn’t pull the punches.

I saw the 50-minute preview last Friday. It’s awesome! The oralists look so limited and constricted! In contrast, the film shows the power and beauty of sign language and of the Deaf community.

There will be a viewing party at my house!

Dr. Jack Gannon told me in person about how upset he was with the AGB, SHHH (LDHA now) and other oralist organizations for their unsuccessful sabatoges on the “Thru Deaf Eyes” museum exhibit at the Smithasonian Institution’s “Arts and Industries” Museum. That was back in Spring 2003 before the official opening of the “Thru the Deaf Eyes” exhibit.

AGB, SHHH and other organizations demanded that the exhibit largely focused on the oral methods, not ASL. The exhibit during the Deaf Way 2003 almost got the wrecking ball. Dr. Gannon successfully put the exhibit altogether despite the strong opposition from the AGB, SHHH and other oralist organizations.

Dr. Jack Gannon showed me letters from the AGB, SHHH and other oralist organizations to him and other finanical contributors for the “Thru the Deaf Eyes”.

We have to fight off the AGB, SHHH and other oralist organizations’ powerful political and social connections for imposing their own illogical beliefs and attitudes on deaf education and way of life upon us and the society at large.

Excellent idea for hosting the viewing party at your house, Rev. Jay Croft. You always are the cool one!

Robert L. Mason (RLM)

Thank you for bringing this up. We all know ABG’s and SHHH’s stand, but it’s good to point this out. I am shocked at their intimation but yet I’m not really surprised, knowing their pride of being ORALIST, and their belief in forcing oralism among the deaf children. I grew up as an oralist, and when I learned sign language, I was banned ever to visit their oral programs. The teachers there consider me as “dirty” because I know sign language, and they refuse to allow me ever to see deaf children, although it was once my “home” with deaf kids. Sad, isn’t it?

It is true that the history repeat itself. I was born deaf and born 1947. My parents was put me in oral school. They tried to teach me learn to listen not to learn ASL. Years to 1963, I started to learn ASL. I became mastered in ASL in two months. Interesting. I am exciting to watch the program tomorrow night.

Opps! I believe that you rushed too fast to belittle
AGB… Out of curiousity I checked out AGB to satisfy my hunger of knowledge… so you be careful next time or you have to eat your own words…
Myself as real deaf mute, I do accept and thank audism… Not for them, we would be still in dark age
So give them some respect…

Bzz! Bzz! Bzz! Bzz! You are SMART! Bzz! Bzz! Bzz! Bzz! Thank you for being letting us know! Screw them the audist people!

Hope they will talk about ASL and Deafness, NOT CI, PSL or cued speech!!! If they do, I will be very angry. Soo hey you all be prepare with your angriness. HA enjoy watch tonight!!

CMS

Great job, Amy!! We are looking forward to watch the movie tonight.
